Lead details

Leave request

Monthly rotas - email consultant supervisor with leave and weekends you would like not to be oncall.

Shift patterns

Standard day: Mon - Fri 0900-1700

Night on-call:  one on-call night each week (on either a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, from 17:00 until 09:00 the next day)

Weekend on-call: one 48hr on-call a month on call from Saturday 0000 - Sunday 2359.

Duties

  • If this is one of your 'hospital rotations' (i.e. not ITP) then you will mainly be based on the inpatient ward (usually with another Dr and daily ward rounds with a palliative care consultant). You will also be part of the on-call team.

  • On-calls are based from home,  you will occasionally be called on your mobile and you can prescribe electronically from your laptop. Rarely, you may need to go in to assess a patient face-to-face.

  • You will have one 48 hr on-call weekend shift each month (so a total of 4 over the 4 month rotation). These run from 00:00 on the Saturday until 23:59 on the Sunday. You will need to go in each morning on Saturday and Sunday to do a ward round by yourself (not too taxing as you know the patients and their plans) and admit any new patients (normally only 1 or 2 admissions each day- sometimes you may have no admissions in which case you can leave around lunch time, but like the weeknight on-calls, you will need to keep your phone off silent incase the nurses call with any concerns.

  • For the on-calls you will always have access to a palliative care consultant via phone.

Learning opportunities

You may have an opportunity to join the community team (alongside another GP trainee who will be doing the ITP palliative care rotation). As part of the community team you can visit patients at home and practice writing lots of MAAR charts.
