Urgent and Unscheduled Care
One of the mandatory requirements during GP training is getting experience and exposure to urgent and unscheduled care. Although RCGP does not give a specific hourly requirement for this it is important to get this experience both to explore different career options going forward and to fulfil the ARCP requirements to complete training - locally the ARCP panel usually expects trainees to complete 40-48hrs of urgent/unscheduled care as a minimum throughout their GP training. There is guidance on this from RCGP here and also from the BMJ careers here. Generally this requirement is best focussed on in your ST3 year as you will be practising more independently at this stage.
We are lucky enough in Greenwich to have multiple options for urgent and unscheduled care as below. It is important for every session to print out this form from the RCGP and get your supervisor to fill it in as a record. You will also be able to get time back in lieu from your normal working week if you take on any shifts which do not fall within your normal working hours.
There are always other opportunities available to get exposure to urgent and unscheduled care though, and if you have any contacts or opportunities to share in Greenwich please do let us know with the form below so they can be added here!
