General Psychiatry
Location: Based at Lewisham community and primary care team
Shift patterns
9-5 days with on calls at Ladywell unit from 17:00-21:00, 21:00-09:00 or 09:00-21:00 over the weekend.
Duties
Community team - predominantly looking after people with chronic mental health issues (psychotic disorders, BPAD, sever depression, EUPD) Primary care team - seeing patients predominantly referred from their GP with first onset mental health issues or acute deteriorations of long standing conditions On call - cover the Ladywell unit in Lewisham and clerk new admissions and CAMHS referrals.

Advice
Make sure you have a good grounding in common psychiatric presentations and history taking as you start seeing patients independently quite quickly.

Learning opportunities
This is a really good rotation for GPs as you see new presentations of common psychiatric presentations and have to manage independently (but with support if needed). It gives you a good idea of what psychiatric secondary care services can offer and when it would be appropriate to refer.
